Spring Street Trolley Lot Closes as 147 Affordable Apartments Head Into Construction
MTS says Affirmed Housing is expected to start construction in late August on the Spring Street Transit Oriented Development at the Orange Line station. This is a different project from CityMark Palm in the Village already on this news board.
What is starting
Two six-story buildings would deliver 145 affordable apartments and two manager units (247 bedrooms) on a 2.2-acre MTS parcel under a 99-year ground lease, plus 159 transit stalls and 53 resident stalls. Homes are aimed at 30% to 60% of AMI. The general parking lot is closed for about two years. Trolley and bus service stay open. Riders are directed to Grossmont, Massachusetts Avenue, or 70th Street. Times of San Diego put the job at about $106 million at 4250 Spring St. It was processed under SB 35, so La Mesa did not get a discretionary Council vote.
Why it matters
- If you live near Spring Street, the park-and-ride is gone for two years and 147 deed-restricted homes are the next neighbor.
- Village parking stays a fight on the CityMark site. Here the story is transit-lot housing actually starting, which is the inventory La Mesa can still add without finding a vacant private lot.
- Construction staging, not a Council hearing, is the near-term issue.
