La Jolla Rec Center Now Closed Mondays After City Hour Cut
The Union-Tribune reported on Aug. 31 that the La Jolla Recreation Center at 615 Prospect Street is now closed Mondays. The city cut the building from 60 hours a week to 40 to help close a projected $146 million deficit for 2026-27. The new hours took effect at the end of August and are expected to last at least through the next fiscal year.
What changed
The building is closed Sunday and Monday. Tuesday through Thursday it is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday noon to 6 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The grounds stay open. At the Aug. 26 Community Recreation Group meeting, Parks and Recreation district manager Jerry Abbott said the city set hours around staffing, peak use, and employment rules, not the board's preferred Monday afternoon window.
Why it matters
- This is a parks-hours cut, not a housing entitlement. It still changes how the Village uses a public building.
- The city ranked this rec center third among the least-needed of 56 centers during budget season. A complete closure was on the table. The 40-hour schedule is what kept it open.
- Abbott said the local board can later buy extra hours with private funding, but that is not a deal yet.
