City Studies Clairemont Library Site for Future Affordable Housing
San Diego is taking public input this month on putting affordable housing on city-owned land, and Clairemont Library is one of 11 sites in the Affordable Home Development Master Plan. This is a separate track from the already-published Clairemont Community Plan capacity story. No housing is being built at the library now.
This site, not the citywide list
The Clairemont Library lot is about 0.46 acres, next to homes and a mall with a grocery store. City staff say any future project on a library site would include a replacement library, not a closed branch. An open house covering Clairemont Library, University Community Library, Mira Mesa Library, and the Rose Canyon Operations Yard was held Aug 12 at Standley Rec Center. The community survey is open through Aug 28 at 5 p.m. If you live near the library, this is the moment to weigh in before a draft plan lands.
Why it matters
- A rebuilt library with housing on top would change that commercial corner, not the single-family streets behind it.
- 0.46 acres is a small pad. Even a dense building here is a node change, not a neighborhood-wide rezoning.
- Watch the survey and the draft master plan if you own nearby or are pricing a Clairemont purchase around that retail cluster.
