City Lists Barnes Tennis Overflow Lot as an Affordable Housing Study Site
NBC 7 reported on Aug. 28 that San Diego listed the Barnes Tennis Center overflow parking lot in Point Loma among 11 city-owned sites in the Affordable Home Development Master Plan. Planning staff said the sites are only under study. There is no development project proposed and no site decision.
What the city put on the list
The overflow is described as 1.95 acres of surface parking on a larger Barnes parcel. A city auditor report found Barnes converted landscape to gravel parking without permits and kept using it after a 2024 stop order. Barnes asked members to oppose housing on the lot, saying the parking is needed for tennis, pickleball, and youth programs.
Why it matters
- This is a study site, not an entitled apartment building. Do not underwrite it as supply.
- It is a different item from Midway Rising and from The Admiral at Liberty Station already on this news board.
- A Point Loma buyer should treat this as a watch item until the city picks sites or files an application.
