First Homes on Convoy Street Open at Alexan Camellia
Alexan Camellia, a 531-unit apartment community by Trammell Crow Residential, held its ribbon cutting as the first housing built directly on Convoy Street. This is a different project from the former Fry's site already covered on this page. If you are buying or renting around Convoy, this is the first real test of whether people will pay apartment rents on a street that used to be only restaurants and auto shops.
What opened
The five- and six-story project has 509 market-rate homes and 22 affordable units, plus ground-floor live-work space in the Convoy Asian Cultural District. Asking rents at opening were about $2,800 to $4,400. Mayor Todd Gloria called it the first of many Kearny Mesa housing deliveries under the community plan that created capacity for tens of thousands of new homes.
Why it matters
- Kearny Mesa is shifting from jobs-and-retail to a place people actually live.
- New Convoy rentals compete with Clairemont and Serra Mesa apartments and may pull some first-time buyers into renting longer.
- If you own nearby, watch parking, evening traffic on Convoy, and whether ground-floor retail actually leases.
